 Limiting Beliefs
 What is a Limiting belief?

Stop Limiting BeliefsA limiting belief is something that you think is true about yourself. You've been told over the years that you are "fat, not clever enough or you'll never find anyone".

Because you've been told these facts by friends or family or told them to yourself you obviously believe them. Beliefs seem to be logical and watertight which keeps us stuck in negative places & not able to move forward.

These limiting beliefs are what they say on the tin - they limit your own self discovery, behaviour and capability in anything in your life at this present moment. Beliefs learnt or given to you in childhood can be very powerful and if the beliefs are negative they can hold you back from seeing and then fulfilling your true potential.

Sometimes beliefs are misleading or incomplete, for example, reading the daily papers, do you believe everything you read in them? Maybe not, they only tell you a small portion of the story about a celebrity, but if you meet the celebrity, and you'll discover what happened to them in reality, and find out the whole story in the paper was made up.

The belief that holds you back is no truer than a belief that spurs you on into positive action, so choose to focus on the beliefs that get you real great results. Your most limiting beliefs about yourself get in the way of the action you need to take. If you believe that you're not bright enough to get that promotion at work then you can give yourself permission not to try.

Start by writing your limiting beliefs on a sheet of paper, and then choose one limiting belief to focus on, and ask your self these questions:

  • What are the consequences of holding this belief?
  • How does it cause me to behave?
  • What evidence do I have to support this belief?
  • What caused me to have this belief in the first place and do these assumptions still apply?
  • Do I want to change this belief?
  • What would be a better belief?

Top 5 reasons why people are challenging their beliefs:

Anchor the New Belief

  • They want to change
  • They want to make a difference in their lives for the better.
  • They want to get things done
  • They want to spend more time on positive things in their lives.
  • They want to change their behaviour.

You now know that you can cancel this belief out with some hard work and determination to change and your limiting belief will be changed to a new personal enabling / positive belief. Changing your beliefs allows you to act in different ways more of the time.

The more you choose positive behaviors, the better the results you get and the better you feel. You need to choose a new powerful positive present- centered belief sentence to replace the old belief that will help to change your thinking patterns.

Create a mental image of yourself successfully carrying out the new positive behavior to reinforce the whole process. Hold this new belief as though it were true for at least a week and notice how your behavior changes and how other people's behavior changes you will improve your confidence and success in future outcomes.

Holding your new beliefs may take some practice and so the new positive belief must be repeated continuously. Whenever you find yourself thinking the old belief say to yourself 'Stop, delete that thought'! Visualize a computer screen with these words appearing on it to assist the deletion process. Now repeat your new positive version to yourself.

Your limiting beliefs are yours - you own them. Beliefs can be changed. If you want to challenge any of your beliefs and want a helping hand to get rid of them and ask some difficult questions, I'm here to help.Give me a call

Have a great September, we're off for a late holiday in the sun. Just to re-charge our batteries before the next few busy months.
